Dolomite and limestone are used in similar ways. They are crushed and used as an aggregate in construction projects. They are kiln-fired in the manufacture of cement. They are cut into blocks and slabs for use as a dimension stone. They are calcined to produce lime. In some of these uses, dolomite is preferred. Its greater hardness makes it a superior construction material. Its lower solubility makes it more resistant to the acid content of rain and soil.

In the chemical industry, dolomite is used as a source of magnesia (MgO). The steel industry uses dolomite as a sintering agent in processing iron ore and as a flux in the production of steel. In agriculture, dolomite is used as a soil conditioner and as a feed additive for livestock. Dolomite is used in the production of glass and ceramics. Dolomite has been used as a minor source of magnesium, but today most magnesium is produced from other sources.

The only ores of chromium are the minerals chromite and magnesio chromite.

The two main products of chromite refining are ferrochromium and metallic chromium; for those products the ore smelter process differs considerably.

For the production of ferrochromium the chromite ore (FeCr2O4) is reduced with either aluminium or silicon in an alumino thermic reaction and for the production of pure chromium the iron has to be separated from the chromium in a two step roasting and leaching process.

Chromite is also used as a refractory material, because it has a high heat stability.

The chromium extracted from chromite is used in chrome plating and alloying for production of corrosion resistant super alloys, nichrome, and stainless steel. Chromium is used as a pigment for glass, glazes, and paint, and as an oxidizing agent for tanning leather.

Garnet sand is a good abrasive, and a common replacement for silica sand in sand blasting. Mixed with very high pressure water, garnet is used to cut steel and other materials in water jets. Feldspar is a common raw material used in glassmaking, ceramics, and to some extent as a filler and extender in paint, plastics, and rubber.

In glassmaking, alumina from feldspar improves product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. In ceramics, the alkalis in feldspar (calcium oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium oxide) act as a flux, lowering the melting temperature of a mixture.
